When Electrical Equipment Testing is Mandatory
Your duty of care as a business owner, employer or person conducting a business means you must ensure any plug-in electrical equipment normally used in tough operating conditions is regularly tested to protect the health and safety of those who work in and occupy your building by law.
On top of reducing electrical risks in the workplace, this helps ensure electrical equipment used in conditions that may result in damage or a reduction in its expected lifespan is always compliant with best codes of practice for WHS.
However, not just anyone can test and tag your electrical equipment.
TEST & TAG COMPETENCE
Any technician you hire for a Test & Tag equipment test must be a ‘competent person’ through training, qualification or experience to conduct electrical equipment testing to the standards laid out in AS/NZS 3760: 2010 and AS/NZS 3012: 2010.

At Elephants Foot, our specialists are trained, experienced and qualified to handle equipment tests and tagging for all our electrical waste room equipment.
WHAT WE INSPECT & TEST
- Visually inspecting external factors of the equipment and connections (e.g. power cord)
- Protective earth continuity tests with a portable appliance tester
- Measure insulation resistance or leakage
- Conduct a polarity test for live cord connection, extensions, etc.
- Find and resolve any wear and tear, damage, warping or defects
We also look at the surrounding environment and factors more unique to your electrical waste management equipment to comprehensively test and tag your machines.
How Often is an Inspection Needed?
The frequency between intervals of electrical equipment testing has more to do with the environmental conditions your equipment is operating in, as well as how much you put it through when in use.
That’s why we recommend giving our team a call to enquire, even if you are not sure you yet need to book an equipment test. This is so that we can help prepare a personalised recommendation for what intervals you need testing to ensure that all your relevant electrical equipment is regularly inspected and above board.
After Service Reports – Tagging
As is necessary by the law, we provide you with a record of the electrical equipment testing in the form of a tag on completion. This will include the name of the specialist carrying out the testing of electrical equipment, date, outcome and date when the next testing must be carried out for electrical safety.
Lastly, we always tag this to the equipment for you, so that you can always know the next date safety inspection and testing is due.
